Kicking off the Mid session recess on Friday 24th September, I made my way down to the Uni bar to check out The Gurge and rat vs. possum who was supporting them...
Not too familiar with the Gurge except for their classic tune 'Polyester Girl', I thought it was high time I checked them out for myself, and so with absolutely no expectations, the night turned into one gigantic splendiferous surprise!

I was absolutely taken with rat vs. possum. They had so much energy! Every one in the band played percussion and drums at some point, and often all together. The sound was BIG and infectious! It fused polyphonic percussion with keys, synth, vocals, loads of guitar effects and pulsing bass. It was such a fun and lively sound, at times quite experimental, but they were always tight and obviously enjoying themselves. I couldn’t sit still and I couldn’t take my eyes from the stage. They were a really pleasant surprise and I am certain they are on the cusp of becoming the next big thing! Every one needs to check them out if they get the chance to see them.
So next to follow was the real drawcard (although I could quite happily have called it a night after rat vs. possum), Regurgitator took to the stage. The energy levels were already on the way up in the crowd and the Gurge definitely didn’t let them slide! With a decade of experience under their belt the trio knew exactly how to rule the crowd.

Mixing a funky blend of old and new tracks, rock and funk, hip swinging and head banging, all three bounced around the stage and the crowd joined them on the floor, sweaty and ecstatic. It was a really good live set made all the more entertaining by their famous video animations beamed up on the wall behind them. Still my favourite was ‘Polyester Girl’. It’s too infectious not to bust into a robot dance to.
